Dan’s bowls are found in the roots of Mountain Laurel, which are often a burl. They are soaked in water for 3-4 years and then hand-carved with axe and knife. He lets them dry slowly in a box of sawdust, and then they are cooked for three days in a mixture of beeswax and olive oil. This process stabilizes the piece and prevents cracking. You can see the results of this practice on Dan’s YouTube channel in a video called “An Exciting Day.”
These bowls are useful as well as beautiful. They are washable, and can be paired with a tiny spoon to make a functional set that can be used for any kind of condiment.
